On 7 June 1918, when he was only 18 years old, coming from Paris and volunteer of American Red Cross, Ernest Hemingway was in Milan from where he was sent to war. In Fossalta di Piave on 8 July 1918, he was seriously injured to a leg for the explosion of a mortar and by the bullets of a machine gun. Despite of the seriousness of the situation, he tried to help other injured people around him. For this heroic and generous action, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, an Italian silver medal for military valour and was promoted lieutenant.
These facts will indissolubly tie Ernest to Veneto and inspire the novels “A Farewell to Arms” (1929) and “Across the River and into the Trees” (1950). Veneto, Brenta, and Piave, are fundamental elements to better understand his personality, which influenced his adventurous life.
The photographic exhibition “Vorrei essere sepolto lassù, lungo il Brenta... La guerra italiana di Hemingway”, curated by Luigi Giorgio Berbenni and Gianni Moriani, re-proposes some moments of this historical period.
